Deteriorating insecurity in South Kordofan force hundreds to flee

(MENAFN) Worsening security conditions in southern Sudan have driven more than 900 people from their homes in South Kordofan state over the past three days, according to UN-related assessments released on Sunday.

Reports indicate that displacement monitoring teams recorded the flight of approximately 365 residents from the city of Kadugli between Dec. 11 and 13, as the local security situation rapidly deteriorated. During the same period, an estimated 85 people were forced to leave the town of al-Kuwayk in the eastern rural parts of South Kordofan.

Separately, escalating instability also pushed around 455 people to flee the city of Dilling within the same three-day timeframe, according to the same assessments.

Those displaced have scattered across several regions, with most seeking refuge in North Kordofan state, while others moved toward White Nile state in the south and Khartoum state in central Sudan, according to reports.

The security environment in the area remains extremely unstable and tense, with developments being closely followed on the ground, according to UN-linked monitoring efforts.

The recent surge in displacement in South Kordofan coincides with intensified clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, alongside their allied faction, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North.

UN estimates further indicate that more than 41,000 people were forced to flee rising violence across North and South Kordofan during November alone.

All three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—have endured weeks of heavy fighting between the army and the RSF, triggering the mass movement of tens of thousands of civilians seeking safety.
